John Wynn-Jones write: On behalf of the WONCA Working Party on Rural Practice (WWPRP), I wish you all a Happy and Prosperous New Year. We are coming to the end of our latest triennium and it’s a good time to reflect on what we have achieved and what we need to do in the next three years.

The World Health Organisation has recently updated its mhGAP guidelines for the management of common mental health problems in low and middle income countries.
WONCA works closely with WHO and offers consultancy services in support of mhGAP.

Ian Couper, Roger Strasser, Jim Rourke, John Wynn-Jones have published a history of the WONCA Working Party on Rural Practice 1992 to 2012 in the journal "Rural and Remote Health". It includes some fascinating memories and conclusions about the state of play at the moment.

I am a middle aged Italian family doctor who lives and works in a rural village in Southern Italy. I work in a solo doctor practice and my surgery is in a wing of my own house. This is quite unusual and considered barely legal nowadays, but is tolerated as I started my practice long ago.
WONCA Working Party on Rural Practice feature
This month we make a special rural feature in WONCA News. In April, the WONCA world rural health conference was held in Dubrovnik and our very active WONCA Working Party on Rural Practice formally met. The WWPRP is chaired by Dr John Wynn-Jones of Wales and he and Dr Jo Scott-Jones of New Zealand have fueled such a wave of enthusiasm from working party members that we have decided to make a special rural feature in this month's WONCA News.
