Dr Karen M Flegg (Australia)

Dr Karen Flegg is a family doctor from Australia, with a diverse background in medicine and management.

She holds an Honours Medical degree and a Masters degree in International Public Health from the University of Sydney; as well as Fellowships of three member organizations of WONCA - the Royal Australian College of GPs; the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine; and the Royal New Zealand College of GPs (ad eundum gradum).

Her background is one of rural practice, with more sub specialised work in indigenous health services and at various clinics concerned with women's health. She has worked in a medical context in Australia, New Zealand, Islamic Republic of Iran, and Papua New Guinea. She has done specialised consultancies in the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Nauru. Since 2006, she has held an appointment as Senior Lecturer in General Practice and Community Health at the Australian National University. She is currently the Director of Training of Coast City Country regional GP training program.

She has over 10 years’ health management experience, including as Chief Executive of the Royal New Zealand College of GPs (98-01) and as a Director of Medical Services in a public hospital. She has served for over 15 years on the boards of a number of family doctor organisations in Australia and New Zealand, and brings expertise in chairing finance, audit and also governance committees. She is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (FAICD).

She has served as WONCA editor since 2010, firstly of WONCA News and since 2012, also of the website. She enjoys the interaction with family doctors from around the world in this role. Her more relaxing hobbies include painting, yoga and meditation.
